Hughton Makes First Signing - Whittaker Joins

City boss Chris Hughton took full advantage of the plight of Glasgow Rangers today as he announced the signing of Scottish international Steven Whittaker.

A former Hibs academy product, Whittaker has 15 Scottish caps and has made over 200 appearances for Rangers over 5 years.

Ironically he is one of Russell Martin's rivals for the right back slot with Scotland, however they have both played together at times for the national team.

Whittaker has won 8 trophy's whilst at Rangers, and will hope to settle in better than previous imports Steven Smith and Ian Murray.

Whittaker became a free agent after he refused to have his contract transferred to the newco Rangers.

Whittaker said, 'All of my experience to date has been in Scotland so I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League, I'm very excited about it. When I spoke to Chris Hughton I was very impressed with his plans to progress Norwich City and everyone I've spoken to in the game has had nothing but praise for the club and the city of Norwich.'

Whittaker brings cover to a wide range of defensive positions, and can also play in midfield.

well, firstly he's a defender with title-winning and international experience - great... but secondly, is he actually our player yet - it seems Glasgow Newco (formerly Rangers) are going to challenge the free-agent status of many of their players, and the legality and financial compensation possibilities of Whittaker's move to Norwich may rumble on for some time... but overall this looks like a first good bit of business for Hughton.

He has international experience yes. But Bangor Rhyl and New Saints have all been in Europe too. Strong team in weak league will always qualify. Been a while since Rangers really progressed too. And how many times a season did he really have to defend? Scotland has afterall been pretty much a two horse race.

going hold fire on him. Would rather have naughton but we will soon see if this guy can handle himself. Still think rangers and celtic are a championship level team myself.
