Could Culverhouse Stay?

It`s been a comparatively tranquil few days in the corridors of power at Carrow Road, as Chris Hughton begins his office move and starts planning for next season.

Despite David McNally`s protestations that there are enough roles for everyone in Team Hughton, it would seem unquestionably likely that Paul Lambert is doing all he can to prise his trusted Lieutenants from his previous clubs` grasp.

In fact, Aston Villa released a statement at the weekend confirming that Alex McLeish`s first team coach, Kevin MacDonald left the club, leaving Villa stalwart Gordon Cowans as the only remaining senior member of a team that delivered such a poor performance last season.

Paul Lambert has gone on record as saying "he`s nothing" without Culverhouse and Karsa, so it would be a surprise if they join Colin Calderwood and Paul Trollope in the role call of Hughton`s coaching staff. Four people into two roles does not go, especially when there maybe contrasting ideas and techniques. Some would say that unity and harmony is needed, not a new vs. old debate on coaching methods. There's Adam Drury to think about too.

It would however be an incredible coup for the club if they both did stay. It`s easy to speculate, but perhaps Culverhouse does feel some loyalty to Norwich City. He was at the club for nine years as a player, and was already a Hall of Fame member. Perhaps he also didn`t agree with his boss`s decision to resign for personal gain, as some are saying that the clause issue is a moot point - Lambert just resigned to get a better contract as Villa would have been willing to pay compensation, and he could have just enforced the clause in his contract rather than throwing his toys out of the pram with such selfishness.

If Culverhouse wanted to join Lambert, he could also resign. The fact he has not leads to further speculation that all is not as it seems behind closed doors.

Whilst McNally acts with a certain external equanimity, it`s likely he is a man on a mission to ensure he has the last laugh when all of this summer`s toing and froing`s finally reach a conclusion, whether Culverhouse stays or not.

Lambert is "nothing" anyway.

Would be good if they stayed. We do have a rather small senior coaching staff so to add Cully to CHs staff would be a great result for the club.

it looks like Mc Nally playing a game to strenghen the clubs hand in terms of the compo for jumpship. If he had really wanted IC and GC he would have discussed it all with them and taken them immediately but he did not. However I still think it was part of the strange plot to avoid compo thinking that Norwich would appoint a full staff backup with new manager thus leaving IC and GC to go without any compo. I doubt if they would stay and work with a new manager and especially with another 3 backroom staff. With CH wanting 3 to come with him that left Mc nasty with one option of saying they wanted to keep them also. If on a rolling contract I assume they can leave on 01 July and all we would have done is hold it up for a month ?

Not sure - does the rolling contract mean that they are effectively on 12 months notice at all times or is it a fixed one year increment?

This contract thing. Very disappointed to read the league managers association are supporting PL. I hope a tribunal will take Savs sensible stance in that there was no need to resign and to simply insist on a contract clause would have been enough. The speed of resignation still stinks of tap up.

As for over load of coaching staff, look at the size of coaching teams in Rugby Union. Forwards, backs, offencive, defencive, fitness, kicking ...... No I think there is space to accomodate them all. And if tales of the strong friendship of CH and IC are true, why not?

The main thing here is what IC actually wants to do. I assumed he would go with jumpship but now I am not really sure.

Another point here of course is that we are only talking one extra coach are we not? To be honest Im not sure exactly what Karsas role is. Directors of football operations are an enigma to me. IC's reputation as the master tactician surely makes him highly desirable to keep. And there is no one coming from the midlands to fill the other position anyway.

I think the HoF Football Operations is more an organising and preparation role - making sure the whole things ticks along nicely. I also think Lambert was more of a figurehead than a do-er but absolutely critical to our recent success nevertheless.
