PL too good for Villa; Liverpool too stupid for PL

Never dull in these parts is it? Nobody would have been shocked when Villa gave Alex McLeish the boot, but I was hoping we would at least have a few weeks this summer before the big red PANIC button was hit on Twitter and the message boards about Paul Lambert's future.

Admittedly Lambert didn't exactly pledge his long-term future to the club when pressed, but when has he ever? Lambert has never been a man of many words and it was exactly the same when Burnley came a calling.

As has been said elsewhere Lambert knows what he is doing, and if it helps strengthen his hand when it comes to negotiating with the board over those new improved contract terms or for adding another couple of million to the transfer kitty he's going to do it (and why wouldn't he?).

So can we just put to bed the assumption that he is leaving this summer because he hasn't told us he isn't, please?

On to Villa. It's blindingly obvious what they would see in Lambert. He's young, ambitious, proven that he can work wonders on a limited budget and doesn't come with a load of unwanted baggage. He's precisely the sort of manager a club like Villa should be going for. In fact to quote Chief exec Paul Faulkner on their official site:

"I think we want to find someone who can reinvigorate the club, someone who can bring some vibrancy back to Villa. That's what we need and that's what we can get.

"You want someone who can inspire the players, inspire the fans and can deliver on the pitch."

That's Paul Lambert alright. But why would he want to go to Villa? Back to Faulkner again:

"I think there are an awful lot of reasons you want to come to Aston Villa. You look at the size of the club, you look at the infrastructure that we have here, both the facility at the training ground is one of the best in the country and our academy is one of the best in the country, our stadium is one of the best in the country.

"We have a fantastic owner who loves the club and has supported his managers, there`s the club`s history, the fans are phenomenal, why would you not want to come here?"

Well. The fact that Villa are looking for their fourth manager in two years suggests their "fantastic" owner doesn't support his managers for long. All the indications are that they have bugger all to spend and an enormous wage bill thanks in no small part to a large number of crap players nobody else will want to buy.

Villa fans probably are phenomenal - when they win - but when was the last time that happened regularly? And if all that isn't enough, their chief scout is Glenn Roeder.

No, if I'm Paul Lambert, I'm setting my sights a little higher than Aston Villa Football Club - regardless of how nice the training ground is. The rewards for success there would be huge, but if I`m Paul Lambert, I'm much more interested in that little situation vacant up on Merseyside.

The problem with that of course are those poor, long suffering Liverpool fans. They will no doubt be screaming for an established "name" to try and bring the glory days back to Anfield, which in reality would cost them a fortune for a couple of years and then they'd start need to start again.

A much smarter move by the Liverpool hierarchy would be to go for somebody like Lambert. The reality is they need a manager like him, and if they had one I genuinely believe next year actually could be their year for once.

Will Lambert leave Carrow Road for a bigger club to further his ambitions? Of course he will - but I'm not completely convinced it'll be this summer.

In the meantime I suggest we make the most of having him at our club, and concentrate instead on supporting Grant Holt at the Euros...wait...what do you mean "Andy Carroll"?

Bugger.

Randy doesn't support his manager very long? MON had 4 yearsm was backed to the hilt financially and spat his dummy out when told to get rid of his high-paying reserves and resigned. Houllier had to quit on ill health, but was still backed in the one transfer window (January - always a hard time to buy - as we smashed our transfer record by signing Darren Bent. McLeish, well he is the worst manager in our history (that is fact based on various broken records) so he had to go. Please research before spouting garbage. Thanks.

WHose the idiot that wrote this half-arsed pile of *****e? dosent do Norwich fans any favours. Stay off the Barley wine

We get that you want to keep your manager, but was there really any need to be so disrespectful to Villa? Not just disrespectful but uninformed and, to put it bluntly, just plain hairy dangly things.

I seem to remember Reading doing brilliantly their first season in the premiership then disater after that. I think while Norwich had a brilliant season you should mind the second season factor. COTVABU

Norwich, you have only been in the premiership 5 min's and you've already jumped on the slag Villa off band wagon, I can't wait untill Lambert does leave you and you slide back down the leagues to where you belong. Sick of you ****s that slag the Villa off, as if we don't get enough ***** from the press.

Villa are something of a sleeping giant. It has of course been a long time since we've won anything and our squad is currently very poor following an effort to reduce the wage bill to fall in line with the new financial fair play regulations. The Villa job has been something of a poisoned chalice, but with the potential the club has I think an ambitious young manager may well jump at the chance, regardless of the risk. There is DEFINITELY money to spend at the club, but the board committed to reducing the wage bill first as a matter of good financial management. Our budget will almost certainly be higher than Norwich's this summer (highlighted by the 24mil we splashed on Darren Bent last January). I think Norwich are a wonderful football club and it's been great to see you guys back in the Premiership this year, but I can't imagine you would have the money to spend that much even on multiple transfers. As Sheriff says, the comments about our managerial instability are a little harsh. I'm not sure whether Lambert will buy into our owners vision if he's approached, but there is the potential for someone to come in and achieve something here. Lambert has done a cracking job at Norwich, good luck next season lads.

What is "Dill" short for. Nice to think even one of those don't think my lot are as misguided as the Poo.

Just saw the grammatical errors in my post. That's what I get for trying to get it done quickly. Anyone would think I had webbed fingers like our Norwich friends ;-) (I kid, I kid, I actually like East Anglia more than most places in England)

As a villa fan I think that is not a bad post - why would he want to come to us? You are right its what randy Lerner can offer him, this is assuming he is on the radar in the first place! A note of sobriety though - its too easy to fall in to the first good premier season syndrome - he needs to be tested either at another club or with NC for the 2nd season. Personally I think he will do well what ever his choice

OOO, One half decent season and don't they get all arrogant. As the Sheriff said. Try a bit of research next time.

Great article Dill, if a little err inflammatory...... I agree that on paper Villa are a bigger club, and I also suspect Paul Lambert's agent is talking to Villa's representatives. However, I think the key point (as made by Dill and Mick Dennis for that matter) is that Lambert and Martin O'Neil are thick as thieves, and are constantly in contact. It would surprise all of us if Randy Lerner wants a mini-Martin and if Lambert would be interested in Villa having spoken at length to MoN himself - unless Randy has learnt the error of his ways. Lambert has done what no other manager has done in the modern game. 2 automatic promotions and then remaining in the top flight, first season. Oh and he's won the Champions League as a player. I would think he will not be short of offers. [Edited by Savvy_Monkey]

4 managers, K Mac was temporary because 'The Gaffer' threw his dollies out the pram when asked to shift some of the expensive deadwood he had recklessly accumulated, Houllier would still be there and IMO doing Ok had he not had his illness, we had turned the corner and were playing well. McLeish was a big mistake as we all knew and now so does Randy. In the last 15 months he spent close on £50m on players to back his managers ..... so I'm sure Lambert will weigh up the situation if offered it. Liverpool won't go with Lambert, the want a Cappello or Mourinho.
astonmilan
Just to clarify a couple of points:
I'm not saying the Villa job wouldn't be a big step up for Lambert as it clearly would be. I'm saying that I think he's more likely waiting for a bigger job to come along.
Secondly, we know what it would mean to us if he goes, believe me. No City fans *aren't* concerned about "second season syndrome". We're just happy to be able to enjoy the ride.

When Norwich have achieved 10% of what Aston Villa have, then you'll be worthy of a response. UTV

Oh dear me, and someone had the balls to call Norwich fans arrogant in these comments for having some optimism, yet you still makes a comment like that Villa4Life. Concerning. Glad not all Villa fans think that way!

If PL isn't hard enough to come over to Villa to sort us out, we'll come over here and trash this site.
jbd656
Villa4Europe I agree that arrogance is probably the wrong word for but I also think that Norwich fans should spend a little more than a year in the Prem before they start judging the size of other clubs in the top division. There is no doubt that Liverpool is a significantly bigger club than Villa but at the same time Villa is also a much bigger club than Norwich. Many forget that Villa are historically the 4th most successful club in England and have enjoyed close to 25 consecutive years in the top flight. Their WILL be money to spend this summer since we just underwent an entire year of wage cutting and frugal trading. The mentality of the ownership has changed and you can prob expect a budget of around 30-40m during the summer. Also as others have mentioned our owner will always back his managers to a good degree. McLeish was an exception and nothing needs to be said about that. Villa would also be a safer option than Liverpool in terms of Lambert building his career in the sense that if God forbid he were to fail at Villa it would not be as detrimental as failing at Liverpool. It also seems that they are close to signing Martinez anyway.

Guru. good article. was that your parting shot. sems to have stirred it up a bit with a few guests. shame villa park is not to lively on a match day. Big club argument... more boring than reality tv. Nothing more to say in the matter as I am not in the least bit interested in villa.
DRAYTON GREEN
Good article, and rattled a few cages. Before I get to the point, what constantly amazes me is the fiery - yet terminally dull - argument between fans of various clubs about what constitutes a 'big' or 'bigger' club. I can't recall what the official measure is. Oh - wait. There isn't one. So why should PL stay at Norwich - which he will for a couple more seasons at least. Firstly: he has achieved great success here in a short time; the more he succeeds here, the more power he has to his elbow here, the better he is able to manage upwards and be in control of his own destiny. Secondly: he doesn't have much money to spend: hasn't held him back to date, and the more he achieves on a small budget, the more desirable he will become (eventually) to other clubs, who will be more and more mindful of FIFA's new financial regulations. So, I'm not slagging Villa of - if some of their fans are sensitive about 'size' so be it. Size doesn't always matter guys. Let's hope that we continue to show that next season, under PL's wise tutelage! OTBC

This article is a bit like a premptive nuclear strike Dill first of all no one from Aston Villa has approached Paul Lambert as far as I am aware all we are seeing is the gutter press acting like bookies and linking Villa with half the managers in football. I must agree if I was drawing up a shortlist Lambert would be on it no doubt. But think your a bit harsh shooting flak at Villa for it,surely it is up to the Norwich Board to secure their manager on a contract that would at least make certain the club were properly compensated should he leave. Personally always got along with the Norwich fans I have met,so not willing to take cheap shots at your club as those I have met would also not indulge in it .
Merlin128777
Clubs are defined as "big" by their history, their fanbase, their stadium, team and facilities. Aston Villa have got most of these things but need work on others, so in the respect of history, stadium and facilities they ARE a bigger club than Norwich. No shame in admitting that, Canaries. As for the writer's comments about our chairman, very wide of the mark. Randy Lerner has supported the 3 managers he's been in charge of to the date - MON threw his toys out, Houllier's health deteriorated and McLeish's football and results weren't good enough. For me personally, I hope you keep Paul Lambert. He did a brilliant job last season and if he's to be judged as a future manager of a "bigger club" then he'd need another season to prove himself at Norwich. I guess we can only see how it develops in the next week or so. PS: Dill, congratulations for winding up half of the Midlands!! Hahaha
