New York Canaries: Gunn a smart move
'For all Roeder's faults, in my opinion his strength was evaluating players,' he said. 'He brought in a solid crop of players - players good enough to climb up the table.
"What Roeder couldn't do was create an atmosphere where those players could flourish. It's the equivalent of getting an over-powered sports car and not knowing how to drive stick-shift. The Gunny appointment is basically going to take what Roeder did and put it to good use.
'That's why I think it's only initially until the end of the season. The board realised that the roster wasn't the problem, but the culture. The quickest way to get that positive culture back would be to hire a known quantity, someone who does not need to get acclimated to the club, and someone who the players already know and trust.
'Bringing in [someone like] Ince or Boothroyd, while possibly better managers, might have risked them trying to reshape the squad in their own image (with funds we don't have) and with only eighteen games left in the season, this was seen as the least-riskiest selection, and one the fans would embrace after the abuse suffered over the past year'.
