Premier League conclusion - how does it affect us?
We now know that Reading and Birmingham will join Derby in the Championship next season following relegation from the Premier League.
Derby`s fate has long-since been sealed but until the weekend just gone the Royals or the Blues could have gotten away with it at the expense of Fulham and (admittedly to a much lesser extent) Bolton. The Yellows have had links with all three clubs during the 2007/2008 season, but what does their relegation mean to us?
Well for starters a much stronger Championship next season, but more directly...
Birmingham CityFor much of the autumn and the subsequent January transfer window one name was mentioned time and time again,
Martin Taylor. "Tiny" enjoyed a very successful loan spell during the initial surge away from the bottom three, and legend has it was all set for a move to these shores only for a combination
Karren Brady an extra £250k to ruin everything.
I think it`s fair to say that we would have had better chance to sign Taylor (assuming Roeder still wants to) should the Blues have stayed up. I would be surprised if
Alex McLeish lets him go now - although he may not be in the job long enough to make the decision.
Frustrated supporters vented their spleen at the board following Sunday`s 4-1 win against Blackburn and the rumblings coming from boardroom the boardroom immediately afterwards, not forgetting the aborted takeover discussed earlier in the season may make Birmingham an even more miserable place to be for a while.
If they can keep most of their squad together (and skimming through it quickly I think they probably will), you`d think they`d be there or thereabouts at the top of the Championship next season.
Reading
Alex Pearce. We had him on loan, he didn`t do too badly,
Glenn Roeder gave out some pretty big signals that he wanted him back but can you see
Steve Coppell letting him out to play again now? Neither do I. Like McLeish, Coppell may not be around at Reading for much longer though so we`ll have to wait and see.
Like Birmingham if the Royals can keep their squad intact they`ll be in with a big shout of bouncing straight back next season. They`ve had an extra year or two in the top-flight, so a lot will probably come down to how well Madejski and the board had budgeted.
Derby CountyWhat can you say about the hapless Rams? The worst team in Premier League history? Probably. The kinkiest manager in the league? Possibly. Likely to bounce back immediately? Unlikely.
Mo Camara was, at 32, probably unlikely to return to Carrow Road in any case but
Paul Jewell will now more than ever want to hang on to his squad players.
Rob Earnshaw looks to be on his way, with Cardiff most people`s favourites to be the "unnamed" club that have had an offer accepted for his services.
What do you think Birmingham, Reading and Derby`s relegation means to Norwich? Have your say below…
