Telford-born Elliott Bennett started his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers, signing professional forms in March 2007.

After a couple of League Cup appearances for Wolves in the 2007/08 season he was sent on loan to Crewe where he made 11 appearances, scoring once. Bennett was then loaned to Bury where he scored once in nineteen games.

He spent the entire 2008/09 campaign on loan at Gigg Lane and was ever-present in the league, playing a total of 50 games (scoring three times) for the Shakers.

In August 2009 he joined Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract.

After making 47 appearances for the Seagulls in 2009/10 (9 goals) Bennett was rewarded with an improved three-and-a-half-year contract in November 2010, tying him to the club until the summer of 2014.

He was heavily linked with a move to Carrow Road in January 2011, but after the two clubs failed to agree terms he eventually pledged his immediate future to the South Coast club and helped the Seagulls return to the Championship, scoring 8 times in 52 games and weighing in with a highly impressive 20 assists to be named in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

In June 2011 Lambert finally got his man, Bennett joining on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
