McLean Expects To Play At Norwich Without Maddison

Norwich City`s new Scottish midfield signing, Kenny McLean is looking forward to joining up with his new club next summer, after admitting he spoke to James Maddison prior to deciding to make the move south but he doesn`t expect to play with Madders in Yellow and Greeen.

The two were team mates at Pittodrie for the first half of last season before Maddison asked to come back to stake a claim at Norwich. Alex Neil though, had other ideas and it wasn`t until Alan Irvine took over that Madders got a chance.

City paid a reported £300k for McLean last month and then loaned him back to the Dons for the rest of the season but the combative midfielder says that he thinks Maddison will move on in the summer, such has been his impact for the Canaries.

This is what McLean said to the Daily Record

"I`d spoken to James Maddison about Norwich in the last couple of weeks - but with the way things are going for him I don`t think he`ll be there to play with.

"Madders showed his quality up here and he just went down there and kicked on. He`s shown what a player he can be and he`s just taken his game to the next level.

"When you look at things like that, that`s what you strive for and that`s what I`ll be looking to do.

"But it`s a long way to go until I get there. It`s all about the next few months at Aberdeen and hopefully finishing really strongly."

There has been a bit of speculation in Scotland that McLean may not be the same player after securing the move to Norwich but with two goals in his last match, there`s no sign of that.

"I don`t think much will change for me on the pitch. If anything it will help me because I`ve got my future decided" he added.

"When you`re coming to the end of your contract you`re thinking about what might lie ahead but that`s sorted now. Sometimes there`s a bit of extra pressure on you if you don`t know what`s next.

"But I`ve sorted my future so now I think I can relax a bit, enjoy my football and just work as hard as I can.

"When I was down at Norwich it just felt right for me. I watched them a few times and the way the manager wants to play suits me.

"I had a look about the place and I just think it`s a good fit. I`ve said for a while it was time for a fresh challenge.

"It`s right for me to move on at this stage of my career and the manager`s been excellent with me ever since I made my decision.

"Both parties are happy with how the situation has panned out. It`s just about focusing on Aberdeen now."

No one knows how Kenny will fit in but he`s looking increasingly likely to be joining a Canary side without James Maddison in it.

No I think it’s getting out of context. What McLean meant was a personal thought. Maybe he did talk to Maddison but no way is Maddison going to tell him that “hey pal I’m off in the summer”. It’s still 50-50 with regards to Maddison here next season. The biggest factors in Maddison staying are his young age, and secondly, being the automatic first choice in a club with promotion ambition next season.

Or scraping a play off birth and adding a touch of magic to the attainment of an unlikely miracle. That would set a cat or two amongst the pigeons!
