Holt Sets The Record Straight

Holt Sets The Record Straight

Grant Holt has joined National League Barrow as player/coach, less than a month after signing for Kings Lynn.

The former Norwich Captain, hero and general legend was only on week to week terms with the Linnets and doesn`t feel as though he has done anything wrong, despite some incorrect reporting of the situation.

"They always knew I was going to try and progress and go up, at the time King`s Lynn didn`t want to give me a year`s contract, which was their option, and that`s just the way it is," Holt told Radio Norfolk`s The Scrimmage

"Like in any walk of life when you get an opportunity to go up, I did it the right way, I spoke to Ian Culverhouse, who is the person I have to speak to and Ian spoke to the chairman and that`s how it`s done.

"There`s been a lot of inaccuracies said, I`m not going to get into a big debate about it but there have been things said which weren`t right - but that`s football at times, things get twisted sometimes and that`s my only disappointment with it really."

"As a coach and as a player you want to play at the highest level that you can and to go back to Barrow as well, where I`ve been before and I know what the fans are like and I know what it can be, it was a fantastic opportunity to work with a very good manager who knows the division, whose been promoted out of the division and has got experience.

"So it`s an opportunity to go and learn, I spoke to the relevant people at King`s Lynn that I needed to speak to and they give me their blessing. So that`s all you can do really, that`s football. It came a lot quicker than I thought it was going to but I didn`t know the option was going to be there."

It must be quite difficult for Holty at this point in his career. He`s 36 and clearly still wants to play but hasn`t been able to get an offer from a league club, so he`s come into non-league to keep playing.

It seems he wanted a year`s contract with Lynn but the club couldn`t or wouldn`t, for whatever reason, commit to that. If he was only on a weekly contract then that could change at anytime for him but it also gives him the flexibility to leave if he had a better offer, which he has.

Good luck to him, I can`t knock him for wanting to get on.
