No Return For Bassong

No Return For Bassong

With the news this week that Ryan Bennett is out for 6-8 weeks after ankle surgery, central defensive reinforcements now seem to be a priority for Neil Adams, despite the signing of Carlos Cuellar, this time last week.

Martin Olsson will miss the Bournemouth game due to the death of one of his parents and a funeral in Sweden, as a result he has been given compassionate leave.

Javier Garrido has a niggling hamstring strain and may also miss out on the visit of Eddie Howe's men on Saturday. That will no doubt mean a return to right back for Russell Martin and a switch to left back for Steven Whittaker - assuming that Garrido doesn't make it, of course.

So, would Seb Bassong be a consideration to return to the squad in these extenuating circumstances?

No. That's the answer from Neil Adams, with young Kyle McFadden seemingly ahead of the experienced ex-Captain of the club after what has clearly been a falling out between the two men.

McFadden partnered Cuellar against Crawley on Tuesday night and did pretty well, however the hurly burly of the Championship calls for a little more experience and it wouldn't be fair to chuck the youngster in unless absolutely necessary.

With speculation that Crystal Palace might be interested in Bassong, who is most likely one of the higher earners at the club, it seems there is still no thawing of the ice.

'It doesn`t alter his situation at all," said Adams. "Everybody knows he hasn`t been used so far and he won`t be on Saturday either but he is a Norwich City player. It is up to him. Would I ever say no, he is not going to play for us? Absolutely not, but there are other players above him at the minute. We need to strengthen the defence and there is nothing to report at this stage but we have four days left in the window and I certainly hope we can do something. I want to go into the next week and beyond September 2 with a stronger defence than we have at the minute. It will have to be right for us but we are working hard on that."

Reports suggest that a deal for Arsenal's 21 year old defender, Ignasi Miguel is in the offing and that City have also asked about Lazio's Michael Ciani.
