New Season, Same Old Norwich

New Season, Same Old Norwich

Here is a first article by Orinoco, I'm sure you'll agree, there are a lot of valid points in it.

I watched the Wolves game this afternoon with a keen sense of anticipation. Neil Adams had promised a more attractive, more exciting season and the pre-season certainly had the goals that we missed so much last time around.

However as the match went on I could see the same deficiencies that we had last year reappear. Luckily it is early on in the campaign so hopefully they can be rectified but it was worrying nevertheless. I would be less concerned if there was a feeling that the new team was not gelling but we have pretty much the same players out there and that was not this issue.

The issue all last season was we don't know how to pass and create. Why did RVW have so few shots on target last season? No one provided him the right opportunities. yes, you can argue that a good striker can create these himself but he should still have got more than he did from the other players around him. Same for today.

We had some decent possession but whenever we had the ball it was short square passing again. The movement was non existent and no one seemed to want to try anything other than pass to the next man. At times it was like watching Rugby, whereby no one passes forward. THIS is what our problem has been and still seems to be.

We have a lot of individually gifted players and in Wes we do have a genuine play-maker but we are lacking the ability to change the dynamic, unless by that you can consider the long balls to our shorter than average team - another exercise in futility.

Kyle Lafferty gave us the option to try longer balls and I have to say he was pretty impressive offering us a different way to play, but the rest of the time it was careful build up, no end product.

So what is the solution?

Other than the team trying to lose this way of playing (which seemed to come with our last manager) collectively, I really don't know. I am not sure we can simply buy players to fill the gap but something is not right at the moment.

Wolves today reminded me of when we were firing under Lambert - they were fast, assertive and determined and they were worthy winners. For the East Anglian contingent, however, the play was off the pace and with little effect. I just hope that this is a wake up call and that changes are made so that we can be effective for the campaign.

The forlorn hope it was going to be different is now totally shot to pieces, thatis NOT what we wanted to see first game up.

I was there today and cannot disagree with anything you have said. It was a worrying first performance.
