Bunn Wants First Team Football

Norwich City goal keeper, Mark Bunn wants first team football and that is part of the reason that he hasn't travelled to Italy with the rest of the first team squad, according to Neil Adams.

Bunn, along with Seb Bassong, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Lucciano Becchio were the four high profile names missing from the Italy trip.

It seems that RvW suffered a knee injury in training the day before the squad left and it was felt that he would be better served staying at home to work with the physio as his chances of being fit were slim and none. Ten to fourteen days is the prognosis for that one and there seems nothing untoward about that and he seems set to stay and play his part.

The futures of the other three are a little clouded though and speculation is rife that they could soon all be on the move.

Talking from the St. Vincent training camp in Italy, Neil Adams told the EDP the following:

"Everyone knows the squad that is out here and we have players pushing for first team places more than others. As and when the (transfer) window closes everyone will know where we stand," he said. "I don`t really want to talk about individual players because that can attract interest from other clubs and we don`t want to give others a competitive advantage or give things away when you are dealing with transfers.

"It is fairly clear there will be players here who will be attractive to other clubs. I appreciate supporters and the media want to know these things but we don`t want to end up in a situation where we give the game away. That applies to all the lads, not just the ones here or at home."

However, he did talk about Mark Bunn and explained that with just one year left on his contract and the player's desire for first team football, that he would be best served staying in Norfolk.

"Mark`s situation is he is in the last year of his contract here and he wants to play first team football and rightly so. I can understand that," said Adams.

"I thought it was a good opportunity to bring Remi Matthews out along with Declan (Rudd) and have them competing for the number one shirt. Mark is in that mix as well but it is better for him to play and train with the 21s rather than come out here and play 45 minutes perhaps in nine days. It is in the best interests of the player and I feel we are well covered in that department."

It seems fairly clear to me that Declan Rudd looks likely to be the new number 2 in the goal keeping department after serving two solid apprentiship seasons at Preston North End. There is no doubt as to who the number one is - John Ruddy is undisputed in that role and rightly so. It must be frustrating for a reserve keeper like Bunn to have to constantly play second fiddle but I suppose that is part of the job.

When he joined the Canaries, he was number two at Blackburn and was coming to the Premier League with JR standing squarely in his way. I guess he thought he could have a go at toppling him but it was not to be. Bunn had a prolonged spell in the first team after JR suffered a long term injury in the 12/13 season that saw him play around two thirds of the season but as soon as Ruddy was fit again, he lost his place.

Bunn isn't a bad keeper. He is a decent shot stopper but lacks a little physical presence, especially when he stands next to Ruddy and his positioning was questionable a few times when he was standing in for JR.

Anyway, the weeks are ticking by and with 5 or 6 weeks left of the transfer window, there looks likely to be some movement soon.

Fair play to Bunny. He served us well. I'm amazed he hasn't gone already. He didn't look out of place at Premiere level so I'd have expected something of a queue exploring his availability.
