This week, young Callum Wilson chose Bournemouth ahead of Norwich City. Both clubs had met Coventry's fee and it came down to the player and his agent talking to each club and deciding which would offer the best package.
If it were to come down just to wages, then City would surely have been Wilson's destination. But there were a lot more factors in play than just shekels.
I've seen quite a few comments this week from City fans suggesting that it was down to Neil Adams not being able to convince Wilson, as to why he chose Bournemouth.
I don't buy that though. I think that says more about those fans' thoughts on City's management than anything else. They may be fans of Norwich City, but I'm pretty sure they're not fans of Adams. They will be exactly the people that Adams will have to convince early on in the season or there will be trouble. Dare I suggest that they will be the first to start booing?
Wilson's decision seems to have been a football one and not much more, which is actually quite refreshing in this day and age.
If you look at the pros and cons for him then I can see why he chose The Cherries.
The pros are that if he came to Norwich he would probably earn 'life changing money' - a term that Eddie Howe mentioned when talking about not being able to compete with Norwich's financial muscle during the sale of Lewis Grabban.
There's also the possibility of a promotion tilt that could mean he'd be in the Premier League in twelve months time, as well as top class facilities, a huge stadium that's always packed and a beautiful place to live.
Grabban is actually a key figure in all this, as Wilson would either be replacing him or being his new team mate and having to compete against him for a place in City's first team.
The cons are that in terms of game time and therefore developing his abilities and furthering his career, there can be no doubt that he would be better served at Bournemouth. Wilson would be up against it from the start at Norwich.
Ahead of him in the pecking order would be Grabban and Lafferty, with Hooper, RvW, Loza and Becchio for company. If he's an ambitious sort of lad that wants to improve himself and get on, then he will know that this only happens by playing and a possible lack of game time must've been a big consideration. It's all very well having a big pay packet each month but unless you're Winston Bogarde, few players seem to enjoy that alone.
I don't think that Neil Adams would've been the reason he didn't come to Norwich.
Sure, Eddie Howe has a great reputation as a young and upcoming coach but to my mind, this hasn't come down to personalities. This has come down to future prospects and playing time. At Bournemouth he will be the new 'number 9' - the chance to be the main man from the start of the season. There seems little doubt that he'd have to bide his time at Norwich.
Lewis Grabban has already proven himself at Championship level and is ready to make a move to a bigger club to try to push on. Callum Wilson is four years younger and at the same point in his career that Grabban was when he first joined Bournemouth from Rotherham in 2012.
He's made this decision based on football reasons and wanting to play, fair play to him.
