Snodgrass Enjoying International Life

Snodgrass Enjoying International Life

After playing for his country in the 0-0 draw against USA on Friday night, City winger, Robert Snodgrass has been talking to the Daily Record about how far he has come in his career and his partnership with Steven Fletcher.

In 2006, the pair were left out of the Scottish U19 European Championship Final side but have been reunited up front for the full national team.

Snodgrass said: "It felt bad that day in Poznan and the two of us were absolutely devastated but we weren`t going to ruin the other players` day.

"It wasn`t about us. Our next step was to wish the lads all the best and get right behind them. We just missed out in a 2-1 defeat.

"It`s funny, we actually spoke about it the other day and about how far we`ve come.

"Steven has a young family now and so have I. Different things like that are all part of developing and growing up.

"The two of us have gone down south and have been scoring goals in the Premier League. I`m one of those people who just lives for the moment and takes each day, each session, as it comes. I try to enjoy the wonderful job we have.

"We are living our dream and the older you get you realise you have to put the work in on the training ground and do that little bit extra. Sometimes you reap the rewards."

His recent beauty of a free kick against West Ham is proof that if you put the work in you'll get the rewards.

But Snodgrass and Fletcher go back a lot further than that U19 side, with the City winger fondly remembering facing Fletch at Boys' level.

Snodgrass added: "James McArthur and Graham Dorrans were in the same side as me but we were up against Fletch - and he was the same back then, always scoring goals. When we were growing up through 16s, 17s, 18s and 19s with Scotland he was scoring.

"But Steven was kept under the radar with Derek Riordan, Scott Brown, Kevin Thomson and Garry O`Connor also about at Hibs.

"It was only a matter of time before he started to shine.

"There`s no doubt Steven was missed when he didn`t play for Scotland under the previous manager. Whether it`s for club or country, he`s a finisher and has proved that on several occasions.

"It`s great that he`s involved again. The role I was asked to play with him is something new to me.

"I`ve played right midfield for the last six years of my career but the manager is trying to get me to adapt to that position just off the striker and it has been good.

"In the past I have always played on the wing, crossing the ball in for Fletch. So this is different.

"I played with Stevie Naismith last time for Scotland and now I`ve done the same with Fletch. If we are given that chance again it will help us develop the partnership and find out more about each other.

"But we`re all playing our part out there. Naismith and Ross McCormack are also very good in that position.

"There are players like myself trying to get into those little holes and full-backs are getting round. That`s what the manager wants and we`ve bought into that.

"You`ve got Alan Hutton going round on the overlap and that`s the way the top teams operate with their full-backs.

"Barcelona have been doing it for years and Bayern Munich have started doing it. The way the manager has us playing means there is a belief and a strut about us.

"The home game against Croatia saw us kicking on through the gears. And against the USA we were excellent in stages.

"The Americans qualified for the World Cup at the top of their group so for us to play the way we did against them makes us believe that our next campaign is going to be different.

"The manager is doing everything behind the scenes and it`s starting to show but we have to kick on."

Playing in a different role for Scotland than he does for City can only be a good thing to my mind, giving Chris Hughton another option if necessary. I think he is a better winger as his delivery is usually very good, but if required in a game it's nice to know that Snoddy is a bit more versatile.
