With the real quality in Leroy Fer and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel being added along with the likes of Olsson and Redmond, could we be seeing a change of formation this coming season?

With our Chief Exec, David McNally saying we are far from done in this window, with two strikers and a centre back being chased no stone is going unturned in the club`s quest to move the next level up on the ladder.

We are currently being linked with not the lower league players that we all have become a custom to in years gone by, but full internationals.

Latest names circling include Maxi Lopez at Catania, Fabio Quagliarella at Juventus and Cheikhou Kouyate at Anderlecht.
Being linked with such players just shows how far the club has come in such a short time.

It's not long ago we were picking up players from Colchester and MK Dons. I mean no disrespect to those teams, those players played pivotal roles in getting us to where we are now and the likes of David Fox are still at the club to this day.

With the players we have now and possible additions coming in I wonder if we may see a home and away formation in the offing, when at home I wonder if we may move into a 4-4-2 formation with width being the key? We seem to now be linked with quick and technical strikers with excellent work rate, which certainly fits with the links to the names above, so I wonder if we may see something like this for home games.

Now, if we don`t land a new CB you could move Martin to CB and bring Whittaker in, which would mean you could use the full back for overlapping runs as both have excellent crossing ability.

In midfield come half time if things aren`t going well for the attacking players, the likes of Hoolahan and Redmond could be introduced for Howson and Pilks or Snoddy which would add more craft and pace to burn.

If for instance we signed both Maxi and Quagliarella and started with Quagliarella, Maxi could be the last change for him as he may not be as techincally gifted as the Italian but chases and works his socks off for the team and applies the pressure that might create a chance.

Away from home is interesting, we could play like last season, the one up top scenario, which for the most part worked something along the lines of this.

Fer and Johnson would sit deeper than ordinary central midfielders but Hoolahan, Pilkington and Snodgrass would sit higher than that and play counter attacking football.

Nick the ball, feed it to Fer and use his ability on the ball to feed it wide or into Hoolahan`s feet. With both full backs pushing on as well into support roles, if either winger is trapped at the throw in line the simple pass to their full back is on and with playing Olsson or Garrido and Whittaker, the full back is in a position to deliver a ball into the box which is something all three of these players are capable of doing.

In Fer and Johnson we have two players that can play this formation well, as both enjoy a good tackle and breaking up play.

With the new season drawing ever nearer it will be most interesting to see who arrives, it will probably be none of the three players I mentioned above, but come the Real Sociedad game we should hopefully know who, along with Van Wolfswinkel will be given the mantle of scoring the goals to keep us in the promised land - and with making sure we are not biting our finger nails come the end of the season.

I assume pre season is the time to look at these formations so it is a bit worrying when the unlikely 442 formation still has a +1 in the team with just over 3 weeks to go to the first league game.
