Jed Steer Joins Aston Villa

Norwich City goalkeeper Jed Steer has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Aston Villa when he becomes a free agent on 1st July.

The news that Steer, who was born in Norwich and joined the Club as a nine year old, is leaving will come as a big shock to many City fans. The fact that he is to join Villa makes this news even more disappointing.

Steer joined the City academy aged nine and signed his first professional contract at 17. He has represented England at U16, U17 and U19 levels and he has a very bright future as a goal keeper ahead of him.

Paul Lambert obviously knows all about Jed and when speaking to the Official Aston Villa site said:

'Bringing in Jed will also add to the goalkeeping department and helps with everyone pushing one another, learning from one another and making everyone better and wanting to improve.

'You want competition for places throughout the team, which is something we didn't have last season.'

It is unclear as to whether Steer was offered a new contract by Norwich and declined to sign it, meaning this was in the pipeline for a while, or that he just wasn't offered a new deal - I'd like to think it was the former but we'll have to wait for an official confirmation on that one.

Not a good day...

it was only a matter of time with City messing around with Steer and Rudd.

I notice that Lambert has now made six signings and is off to Germany for pre-season which is all very familiar. The news about Steer somehow seems much worse because he is a Norfolk lad and he's leaving - I guess that is the reality of football and that there is no room for sentiment...

David McNally has confirmed via Twitter that Jed was offered a new contract. He wrote: "Jed was offered a new contract. He has decided to move on. As a top young player, we expect to receive considerable compensation for him."

LETS HOPE SO. why should they get him on the cheap.
DRAYTON GREEN
Sad to see Steer go while Bunn stays and we entertained the likes of Camp as back up . It all seems wrong to me
yellow belly
it is wrong. he refused contract but wouldn't you as 4 th in line
DRAYTON GREEN
As my missus pointed out, Jed wasn't going to play at Norwich. He probably has a realistic chance of challenging for the No.2 spot at Villa, Lambert doesn't seem to rate Given too much.
Tuckster
and I do not rate bunn too much we had better keep ruddy
DRAYTON GREEN
A week or so ago the rumour was Lambert chasing Ruddy. Well clearly he had a target in mind. Just not the one mentioned. God here we go again chasing Villa for due compensation.

why is this not forced to be agreed before any signing ?
DRAYTON GREEN
so we now have rumours of ruddy to chelski which I cannot see happening BUT that would leave us with bunn as Nr 1.... HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE HAD SO MANY HOME GROWN KEEPERS AT ONE STAGE
