'If It's Football, It's Vital'

What does the future hold for Steven Smith?

With the Canary's proud promotion to the Premier League now confirmed, all eyes are understandably starting to focus on what happens next.

Inevitably this means that some of the heroes who fought so hard to book a place at the top-table of English football may not get the opportunity to prove themselves there.

A few are out of contract, some will get the chance to rub shoulders with Rooney and co, but several will be deemed surplus to requirements and will be plying their trade elsewhere.

So with that in mind (and not at all ripping off a series of articles on Vital Pompey) we decided to flick through the City squad to see who we think fits into each category...

Signed from Rangers on a Bosman free transfer last July, big things were expected from Steven Smith.

An achilles injury kept him out of action at the beginning of the season but he got his opportunity thanks to an injury to Adam Drury, only to pick up a hip injury which put him on the sidelines until Christmas.

It was during this time that Paul Lambert confirmed Smith and his young family were struggling to settle in the area, and at the end of January he packed his bags and joined Aberdeen on loan for the rest of the season.

A rare case of a Lambert signing not working out, but we got Mental Marc Tierney instead so I'd settle for that. Smith won't be back, he'll probably end up either sticking with SPL or signing for another side north of the border for an 'undisclosed' fee.
